Thomas Maddox Police Officer Advanced Training

Officer Maddox has been an employee of LVMPD for over 18 years working as a corrections officer, patrol officer, detective, community policing officer, and in the Advanced Training unit.  Officer Maddox has worked in the military, private, and public sectors.  He provides a compressive overview of transitioning related topics across a myriad of venues.  He served in The United States Air Force where he worked as a Crypto-logic Linguist/Language Analyst. Officer Maddox has An Associate in Medical Laboratory Technician, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and has completed all coursework on his Doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix (UOP).  Officer Maddox has received Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisor, and Instructor certification from Nevada POST.  His instructor certification includes Instructor development facilitator, Instructor development train the trainer certification, IPSLEI facilitator for leadership development, Training Staff Development, Instructor development- FEMA, State of Nevada License for Educational Personnel, TESOL Certification from International open Academy, and Coach Certification from ExpertRating Global Certification.  Officer Maddox is a certified Bi-Lingual Spanish translator from the Defense Language Institute, USAF and by LVMPD.
He has been integral to every supervisor level training at LVMPD, from first line supervisor all the way to the rank of captain.  This has equated to over 600 hours of instructional leadership training to over 700 employees. His total instruction time is over 2,000 hours at all levels from volunteers, recruits, commissioned officers, civilian staff, supervisors, outside agencies, and even at the executive level. In addition, Officer Maddox has approved, authored, developed, and implemented over 150 courses in both leadership, investigative courses, and administrative skills. 
Officer Maddox has been A Keynote speaker in three University of Phoenix Symposiums; Policing in a Post Ferguson World, Body Camera: A Blessing or A Curse, and the Future of Policing.  Officer Maddox has been a core speaker at State and National conferences to include Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Nevada Association for Financial Professionals, The Nevada Bar association, Nevada Narcotics Officers Association, Nevada Narcotics Officer Association, and Southern Nevada Gang Investigators Association. 

 

Joanne Healea Corrections Officer Advanced Training 

Officer Healea has been an employee of LVMPD for over 19 years. She has been an intrical part of the development and training of over 100 courses and classes for Law Enforcement and Security Departments.

Synopsis of Proposed Training

The overall goal of the training is to improve employee efficiency, increase organizational effectiveness, and enhance operations for your organization. Our Advanced Training Staff will learn and implement your local laws for applicable courses. 

The following is a partial list of training courses that can apply to your organization. With a proper security assessment there may be other courses we have or can develop specifically for your organization. Active Shooter 

Run Hide Fight Course Overview (4 hours)

Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and evolve quickly. In the midst of the chaos, anyone can play an integral role in mitigating the impacts of an active shooter incident. An active shooter as an individual or individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.

In this course students will learn:
How to respond when an active shooter is in your vicinity
Run-Hide-Fight
• What to expect when law enforcement arrives
• How to react when law enforcement arrives
• Information to provide the emergency    communications center

 

Conflict Resolution 

Course overview (4 hours)

 

Every workplace has conflict. We all see it, and at some point, we all feel its impact. The word conflict has a negative connotation for most people, but despite that feeling, not all conflicts are bad. Most often, the problem arises when conflict is ignored, and people just wish for it to go away on its own.

Resolving conflict in a positive manner is a skill that can be developed and practiced.  Being heard can be one of the most important goals of someone engaged in conflict.  Knowing how to listen and deploy appropriate communication tactics is determinative of whether a conflict will have a positive or negative resolution.  Examine listening skills, appropriate and strategic verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and how to assemble a conflict management plan likely to yield positive resolutions.

Code 4 Communication

 

Course Overview (4 Hours)

In this class students will learn techniques to interact with employees, customers, and the community at large.  Effective communication is about more than just exchanging information. It’s about understanding the emotion and intentions behind the information. The goal of this course is to provide participants with tools to improve overall oral skills.

Constitutional Law

Course overview (3 Hours)

In this class students will receive 3 hours of basic constitutional law for security professionals.  In this block, students will be given a basic overview of constitutional law, specifically the bill of rights amendments pertinent to security professionals.  Students will identify the relationship between security professionals and law enforcement and the importance of following accepted practices when interacting with the public. 

 

Effective Report Writing 

Course overview (4 Hours) 

In this class, students will learn the importance of writing clear and concise reports, the importance to the employee and organization of proper documentation, and tricks and measures to increase writing efficiency and effectiveness.  Students will examine common writing errors and techniques to address these shortcomings to enhance organizational functions.

 

Identification Checking

Course overview (3 Hours)

In this class students will learn to identify the security features of state and federal identifications.  

Students will be given methods to enhance the employee’s ability to verify identifications. 

 

Credit Card Checking 

Course overview (3 Hours)

In this class, students will learn to identify the security features of credit cards.  Students will be given methods to enhance the employee’s ability to verify identifications.
